The 3 best Seawolves uniforms from 2017…and the one we want to see in 2018

Thanks largely to the efforts of Port Jefferson-based Pro Jerseys, Stony Brook football dressed to the nines on gamedays last season. We’ve written at length for years about the Athletics Department’s historically conservative approach to things like uniforms and field & court designs, but under AD Shawn Heilbron, Seawolves teams have started to embrace bolder looks.

That new philosophy was on display last season, with Seawolves football leaning into new uniform designs on multiple occasions. Here are our three favorite looks, and one proposal for this season.

The All-Reds

Seawolves Athletics have changed a lot since they joined Division I in 1999, but one thing that hasn’t: the color red. From Day 1, Stony Brook has leaned all the way in on red as the primary color for Seawolves athletics.

Consequently, every Seawolves team sport uniforms heavy on the red, and last season, Stony Brook football took the field during homecoming with a full compliment of red attire.

The 2017 version of the red jerseys featured navy and white accents, breaking up the monotony that plagues some of the NFL’s color rush jerseys.

The New York Navys

Navy blue has been a tertiary color for the Seawolves from the beginning, but only in the last two years has the color really been embraced by the Athletics Department.

It began with basketball in 2016, when both the men’s and women’s team adorned all-navy jerseys for home games during the regular season. They proved to be popular with fans though, leading Athletics to roll out the look across the rest of the Seawolves teams, including, in 2017, football.

The jerseys only got one game though, and it was a forgettable one: Stony Brook’s lone FCS loss during the regular season last year, at home against Delaware.

Here’s hoping the L didn’t turn off the team from returning to the look in 2018.

The All-Whites

The biggest crime from last year was that home fans didn’t get to see the freshest version of their Seawolves in person.

On opening day last year at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, Stony Brook took the field in these dope-as-hell all white uniforms.

Everything about them is perfect. The navy trim around the red lettering and accents. The classic stripes running down the pant legs, across the shoulder pads, and around the helmets. The helmets!

Unfortunately, you likely won’t have a chance to see these in person in 2018 either without making travel plans. Stony Brook traditionally saves the white jerseys for road games, and if last year is any indication, your best bet to catch a glimpse of this combo will be during their season opener at Air Force.

All-in for All White

All-white uniforms have become a staple of many a college football program, and for good reason: they look good just about everywhere.

I’m loath to mess with last year’s phenomenal all-white look, but if so inclined, the Seawolves have room to go even more minimalistic this season. Brookland adapted a look Nike designed for the University of Washington to make it fit in Stony Brook’s locker room, and now all we want for Christmas is one game with these.

Let’s make it happen, Stony Brook.
