In the 1960s, the incident took place in a German prison — with inmates being persecuted by prison guards. There was a criminal named Schmidt there and guards treated him with respect and dignity.

All of this forced the rest of the prisoners to think that he was an agent of these guards. Schmidt took the oath to reassure the prisoners that he was a prisoner like him and had nothing to do with the security services.

But no one believed him, so the prisoners said,

“We want to know why the prison guards treat you differently tdehan us?”

Schmidt said to the prisoners:

“Ok! tell me what you write in the weekly letters you write to your relatives.”

All said in one voice,

“We write about the story of the cruelty and abuse that happened to us in the prison by these guards.”

Schmidt replied to the prisoners,

“I write to my wife every week and in the last lines of the letter, I mention about the good behaviour of the prison guards and sometimes I write the names of some guards in my letters and praise them.”

The prisoners replied to Schmidt,

“What has this to do with all this, when you know that we are treated with great cruelty here?”

Schmidt said to the prisoners that the intelligent people do not send all our letters and messages out of the prison until the guards read them themselves, and thus they find out every small and big things and change the things in letters.

The next week, the prisoners were shocked to see that all the prison guards treated the prisoners worse than before. Even, Schmidt was treated the same way and was treated very harshly by the prison staff.

A few days later, Schmidt asked the prisoners,

“What did you write in the letters of this week?”

All replied,

“We wrote that Schmidt has taught us a new way of deceiving the accursed guardians and gaining their confidence and trust.”

Hearing this, Schmidt beat his head in sorrow and felt guilty.

So the lesson is that it’s good to help others, but it is more important to know the nature of the person you are talking to.
