MWC19 — The raise of blockchain smartphones

With more than 2400 exhibitors, 105,000 participants and 200 countries represented, the Mobile World Congress is the largest digital exhibition in Europe. It is held every year in Barcelona and gathers the entire digital industry.

As every year, the smartphone “Fashion Week” dimension of the event has been very visible, but of course the important topics were not forgotten, in particular 5G with its use cases for the industrial IoT and connected car, Embedded AI (thanks to new SoCs such as Qualcomm’s SnapDragon 855) and its implementation in all smartphones… and also cybersecurity.

But my focus for this post will be on the announcements and products that will democratize cryptocurrencies and blockchain for the general public, and the initiatives are not isolated:

• Samsung presented the GalaxyS10 with its integrated cryptocurrencies wallet (Bitcoin, Ethereum but also Enjin Coin and Cosmo Coin) and several decentralized applications (Dapps) that were featured. The wallet is secured via an off-line hardware chipset that supports contactless payment (in cryptocurrencies). Even if it is already possible to install wallets on any phone that has a secure physical element, this is still a big step forward for the cryptocurrencies democratization. Samsung also made a great job on the blockchain tutorial at wallet first launch.
• HTC introduced the Exodus 1 smartphone, initially only for purchase in cryptocurrencies, it is sold online and should be delivered from the beginning of April. Exodus 1 allows you to run an Ethereum node (decentralization) and has its own wallet under the name of Zion Wallet. It has has a very interesting feature, namely “Social Key Recovery”: to recover your private key in case of loss, you can partially entrust it to 5 close contacts and the help of 3 of the 5 contacts will be necessary to restore the lost key. A suggestion heard by several people in the Ethereum community in DEVCON and which was finally implemented. Finally, thanks to the partnership with Opera Android, users have a Dapp Ethereum browser but also a selection of default applications that highlights the transparency dimension of the blockchain (e. g. Numbers). My only regret: the new Qualcomm SnapDragon 855 has not been integrated.
• Sirin Labs presented “Finney”, the smartphone funded by an ICO ($150M) and featured on Amazon Launchpad. This smartphone has its own OS (SirinOS) and its own “Dapps Store”. Interestingly enough, the “Earn & Learn” program rewards users for learning the codes of this new environment.
• PUNDIX exhibited the XPhone which was in demonstration even if the commercial launch is only for the end of the year with only 5000 units. This smartphone has a blockchain mode (Function X) that relies on the decentralized ecosystem: storage, texting, telephony, Internet browser and everything else. A diehard vision of user sovereignty… on the condition that Pundix blockchain’s infrastructure of the is truly decentralized.
• The startup Electroneum introduced the M1, a low-end Android smartphone (target price at $80) and which is able to mine the currency of their network called ETN. ETN mined tokens can be used to recharge your prepaid operator account (minutes or data) but also for purchases. Electroneum has launched its smartphone in South Africa with the MVNO “The Unlimited”!

We can only welcome the emergence of those products, which will ultimately contribute to the adoption of cryptocurrencies for a wider public.

But the Mobile World Congress is also the startups and major companies that continue to make progress on blockchain applications and in particular (not exhaustive):

• The Brave browser, which aims to establish the foundations of a new Internet where web users are not the “product” and where they are rewarded for their “attention” (audience). As a reminder, this is a project initiated by Brendan Eich, the inventor of Javascript language and one of the co-founders of the Mozilla Foundation.
• SK Telecom (the Korean operator) presented a Blockchain identity solution in partnership with Deutsche Telecom. What is interesting is that the user profile is managed on the smartphone and with each login or use, the smartphone decides which profile data it wants to share! A concrete and interesting vision of the recovery of data sovereignty by Internet users…
• Mercedes Benz, which presented its GreenCoin program (internal startup) to reward good behaviors.

This edition of the Mobile World Congress was therefore the opportunity to confirm the messages collected during the latest CES 2019. Although there is still a long way to go, the decentralization movement is well under way and as a citizen, we can only be pleased about it.

Also, we are talking more about tokens and cryptocurrencies (and not just blockchain technology), the essential unit of account to create the economic incentives to build a virtuous ecosystem and to involve and engage the user.

Avec plus de 2400 exposants, 105.000 participants et 200 pays représentés, le Mobile World Congress est le plus grand salon du numérique en Europe. Il se tient chaque année à Barcelone et rassemble l’ensemble de l’industrie du numérique.

Comme chaque année la dimension “Fashion Week” des nouveaux smartphones a été très visible, mais bien entendu les sujets de fonds n’ont pas été oubliés et notamment la 5G avec ses cas d’usages dans l’IoT industriel et la voiture connectée, l’IA embarquée (grâce aux nouveaux SoC comme le SnapDragon 855 de Qualcomm) et sa mise en oeuvre dans l’ensemble des smartphones … et sans oublier les problématiques de cybersécurité.

Mais ce que je retiens et qui va nous intéresser dans ce post, ce sont les annonces et produits qui permettront de démocratiser les crypto-monnaies et la blockchain auprès du grand public et les initiatives ne sont pas isolées :

• Samsung a présenté le GalaxyS10 avec son portefeuille (wallet) intégré de crypto-monnaies (Bitcoin, Ethereum mais aussi Enjin Coin et Cosmo Coin) et plusieurs applications décentralisées (Dapps) mises en avant. Le portefeuille est sécurisé via un dispositif hardware off-line et qui supporte la fonctionnalité de paiement (en crypto) sans contact. Même s’il est déjà possible d’installer des wallets sur n’importe quel téléphone qui dispose d’un secure element physique, il s’agit tout de même d’un grand pas en avant pour la démocratisation des crypto-monnaies pour le très grand public. On saluera le tutoriel blockchain au lancement du logiciel de portefeuille.
• HTC a présenté le smartphone Exodus 1. Initialement achetable uniquement en crypto-monnaies, il est vendu en ligne et devrait être livré à partir de début Avril. L’Exodus 1 permet de faire tourner un noeud Ethereum (vive la décentralisation) et dispose de son propre wallet sous le nom de Zion Wallet et dispose d’une fonctionnalité très intéressante à savoir le “Social Key Recovery” : pour retrouver sa clé privée en cas de perte, il est possible de la confier partiellement à 5 contacts proches et l’aide de 3 des 5 contacts suffira à restaurer la clé … Une suggestion entendue plusieurs dans la communauté Ethereum aux DEVCON et qui a été enfin été implémentée. Enfin, grâce au partenariat avec Opera Android, les utilisateurs disposent d’un navigateur de Dapp Ethereum (Dapp Browser) mais aussi d’une une sélection d’applications par défaut qui mettent en avant la dimension transparence de la blockchain (ex. Numbers). Mon seul regret : le nouveau Qualcomm SnapDragon 855 n’y ait pas été intégré !
• Sirin Labs a présenté “Finney”, le smartphone financé grâce à une opération d’ICO (à 150M$) et mis en avant sur Amazon Launchpad. Ce smartphone dispose de son propre OS (SirinOS) et de son propre “Dapps Store”. Assez intéressant, le programme “Earn & Learn” qui récompense les utilisateurs pour apprendre les codes de ce nouvel univers.
• PUNDIX a présenté le XPhone qui était en démonstration même si le lancement commercial n’est que pour la fin d’année avec seulement 5000 unités. Ce smartphone a un mode blockchain (Function X) où qui s’appuie sur l’écosystème décentralisé : stockage, envoi de texto, téléphonie, navigateur Internet et tout le reste. Une vision jusque boutiste de la souveraineté utilisateur … à condition que l’infrastructure de la blockchain Pundix soit vraiment décentralisée.
• La startup Electroneum a présenté le M1, un smartphone Android low cost (prix cible à 80$) et qui est capable de miner la monnaie de leur réseau qui s’appelle ETN. Les tokens ETN minés peuvent être utilisés pour recharger son compte prépayé opérateur (minutes ou data) mais aussi pour des achats. Electroneum a lancé son smartphone en Afrique du Sud avec le MVNO “The Unlimited”!

On ne peut que saluer l’apparition de ces produits qui contribueront à terme à l’adoption des crypto-monnaies pour un plus grand public.

Mais le Mobile World Congress, c’est aussi les startups et grand comptes qui continuent d’avancer sur les applications blockchain et notamment (non exhaustif) :

• Le Browser Brave qui a vocation à établir les bases d’un nouvel Internet où les internautes ne sont pas le “produit” et où ils sont récompensés pour leur “attention” (audience). Pour rappel, il s’agit d’un projet initié par Brendan Eich, l’inventeur du langage Javascript et un des co-fondateurs de la fondation Mozilla.
• SK Telecom (l’opérateur coréen) a présenté une solution d’identité Blockchain en partenariat avec Deutsche Telecom. Ce qui est intéressant c’est que le profil utilisateur est géré sur le smartphone et à chaque login ou utilisation, celui-ci décide des données profil qu’il souhaite partager ! Une vision concrète et intéressante de la reprise de souveraineté des données par les internautes …
• Mercedes Benz qui a présenté son programme GreeCoin (startup interne) de récompense à la bonne conduite.

Cette édition du Mobile World Congress fut donc l’occasion de confirmer les messages récoltés pendant le récent CES 2019. Bien que le chemin reste encore très long, le mouvement de la décentralisation est bien en marche et en tant que citoyen, nous ne pouvons que nous en réjouir.

Également, on parle davantage de tokens et crypto-monnaies (et pas que de technologie blockchain), l’unité de compte indispensable pour créer les incitations économiques qui permettent de mettre en place un écosystème vertueux et à impliquer l’utilisateur.
