Plants on white wall

As soon as you walk in you will see their logo inscribed into a living wall.

The interior of the shop is comprised of pristine white walls with shelves carved from polished wood garnish. The shelves are dark brown wood supporting clay pots holding greenery. A variety of unique plants are adorned on the walls, with vines spilling out of their soil, such that it feels like being inside a new aged space garden.

“Baking shit from Scratch since 2009” boasts the slogan of the bakery, crowned with their logo: A one-eyed Pekingese dog. The baristas are friendly, laid-back hipsters, who assured me everything in the store was hand crafted with the artistry of passionate chefs. Wholesome Bakery is a female owned and majority female operated business since its creation 9 years ago.

One of one, no clone exists of this location. Everything is baked right in house, with the kitchen in plain view of the cafe bar. Birthday cakes and custom cupcakes are a common take home item for regulars.

Boasting an unprecedented selection of gourmet pastries, cupcakes, and sandwiches, Wholesome Bakery has rapidly become one of my favorite neighborhood places to eat in the Haight district of San Francisco.

Menu

The moment that really made my eyes light up was when they informed me that everything behind the glass was 100% gluten free. Having celiac, this is very hard to come by.

The Matcha green tea latte adorned with rose petals, and the almond cake with coconut shaves.

The fact that there is no wifi is a positive for the bakery’s character — as it is nestled in the middle of the nerdy tech center of San Francisco. Perhaps an intentional choice, this preserves the authenticity of the bakery cafe environment, and acts as a repellent against computer zombies. Most people can be found enjoying their meals, having lively conversation, or browsing through the selection of vintage magazines and photo-books.

You can try their goodies in select grocery stores: Bi Rite, Rainbow grocery, and rapidly growing in distribution.

Main seller: Wholesome bakery cookie sandwiches.
