Since Buckets started, Projects have been totally private only accessible to members who have been added by an admin. Initially, we knew that Projects would eventually gain public access controls but Rome wasn’t built in a day, right?! This is just one of the many awesome updates our team have been working on, and we’ve realized it’s time to give it a little more prioritization.

Let me fill you in a bit on how Project Permissions work in Buckets (just in case you’re not in the loop) and share my own experience of how it’s evolving.

When you set up a Buckets Project, you can add members using their usernames or email addresses. However, if a user wanted to request access to your Project prior to now, it became a little more complicated.

In another life (i.e. the life I was living about 2 weeks ago), the only way to access a private Project was to get in touch with the Project admin by phone/email/carrier pigeon or whatever means available, and ask them to add you. Sounds like a heck of a lot of work for one small request right? But, you see, therein lay the problem: it wasn’t possible to request access to the Project from within Buckets. Which was zero fun for me whenever my remote-based colleagues were fast asleep and I needed instant Project access!

As Buckets continued to grow and our user base became more engaged in requesting specific features/functions, we knew that Project Permissions were fast becoming a big user experience issue. And we needed to do something about it. So… we did.

FYI: this is why your feedback is so important to us because it helps us to clarify what to prioritize in the development process.

In this latest update to Privacy Permissions, you can request access directly via Buckets and the Project admins will receive your request. Ever used Google Docs? It’s pretty much the same thing. Personally, as I work within a number of Projects at a time, it’s much easier for me to request access to a new Project this way as I’m not leaving the app and disrupting my workflow.

For example, if I need to get into a design Project and have to hit up a colleague on Slack, I’m probably going to get distracted by the latest Slack convo updates. And disruption and “flow” do not mix. Trust me. The average person spends less than 5% of their working day in a state of flow and the best way to improve this is to automate your workflow — especially by avoiding distractions like this. Watch This Space!

Honestly, I use Buckets every single day (obviously!) and this latest update makes my life SO much easier. It’s one of many things we’re doing to improve your user experience and I hope you all find it as useful as I do.

This is only the beginning of what we have planned going forward. We’re going to be rolling out even better updates around editable Projects and Project permissions over the next few weeks, so watch this space!
