Did you know that playing video games is good for you? Just look at the research…

All these darn kids today! Always inside, eyes glued to some flashy game thingy — why can’t they read a book or play outside?! Whoa. Relax grandpa. All these darn kids today can probably focus a lot better than you could at their age, and research suggests that because of the video games they play. Rolling a bike tire down the street with a stick just doesn’t have the same mental benefits.

According to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience in February 2018, gamers experience changes in brain activity that helps them focus on relevant information while screening out distractions. Hear that kids (and parents)? Maybe you should get to that math homework after an hour or two of gaming…. if you can then focus on math and not the game.

Just about an hour is all researchers think a player needs to experience the cognitive benefits of some fast-paced screen time. The study was conducted on 29 people on League of Legends, both regular players and newcomers to the gaming world. Both groups experienced a heightened sense of attentiveness and focus after playing as demonstrated by their brain activity.

And this study isn’t a one-off either. In 2010, research review found that games like Halo and Call of Duty might have a positive impact on visual attention. Other studies have highlighted the effectiveness of gaming for educational and therapeutic purposes as well as improving reaction times and hand-eye coordination.

Even spatial visualization abilities, like mentally rotating and manipulating two and three-dimensional objects has been shown to improve with video game playing.

BUFF makes that time spent gaming even more worth your while. While playing a few rounds of LOL and getting your brain super focused, BUFF rewards you for your time with BUFF coins that can be spent on in-game virtual items or even exchange for cash. How about that? Not only does gaming increase your motor skills, you can make money while doing it. Coins aren’t limited to just one game either. They can be spent on items across gaming titles and publishers.

No need to tell grandpa though — he’ll probably keep being sweet old grandpa no matter what you say. But we know that gaming isn’t anywhere close to being the waste he thinks it is!
