Thanks to the last, long days of summer, September’s harvest is normally spectacular — it’s one of the best months for fresh, tasty produce. The month straddles the best of both worlds, with plenty of sumptuous fruit still at its peak, and the beginning of autumn’s rich bounty of root vegetables and hearty fare. Read on to find out what to add to your cart this month.

Fruit

There are plenty of traditional summer fruits still available, such as peach, blueberries, and raspberries, but more exciting still is the products coming into season. Pears and plums are now abundant, and apples are coming into their own too. September is the perfect time to buy figs, while grapes are only available during a very short window (this month and next).

Vegetables

The onset of fall means one thing — root vegetables. Carrots, potatoes, butternut squash, and leeks are coming to their peak, and September is great for artichoke. Wild mushrooms are in full bloom too, as are green beans. Kale is just coming into season, as is beetroot — both are every bit as healthy and nutritious as they are colorful!

Meat & Seafood

Lovers of game rejoice! September is duck season, but also a great time to find venison and goose. Lamb is also plentiful at this time of year, and for seafood fans, while tuna and salmon are widely available, the real star of the month are mussels — September is the best time to enjoy some juicy, succulent moules .
