What’s UX designer doing
I have been answering “What’s UX designer doing?”, “What’s your job?”…for no less than 100 times. To different people, I gave them different answers according to their understanding/background. e.g. I would tell people who is similar to the technology industry I am delivery wireframe and would tell people like my dad and my mom that I am defining the reaction when you interact in an app. There is actually another answer bury in my mind, which can be more abstract but be more precise to what I think a UX designer is doing or working for:
“UX designer’s job is not delivering a wireframe, a wireframe is the output or the tool to communicate what UX designer really works on — Find the value of a product for users then make the product be as it should be in proper flow/look/design…”
Why I say to find the value is the most important thing is because the goal of any product can be set as to satisfy your user in general. Satisfaction comes from solving a need , and this creates value to your user. I’d rather focus on the value more than the need. To solve a need is more passive, and to provide value can creates needs. To a photo editing product, a fast and simple way to get a good result provides value to normal users, and this is Instagram; a powerful tool which allows you to create the effect of your imagination is valuable to professional users, and this is Photoshop. When your girlfriend asks for a tools to beautify her photo and you give her Photoshop, man, you are getting yourself in trouble. Product/market fit, information architecture, user-centered design, user survey…UX is everything about (good) experience. But the first and the most important thing to a UX designer is to find/create value for your users.
