How I got started with Construction Tech

My decade long journey in the construction tech world started with a few small classroom projects at Texas A&M.

It was 2008 and I was studying construction management at A&M. BIM was driving most of the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) tech world at that time. I was always interested in the entire lifecycle of AEC projects and collaborative project delivery processes.

My research was focused on application of lean principles in the construction industry and my experience with computer programming helped me better understand the tech side of things.

Later when I started working as a BIM Coordinator for a large GC on a multi-billion dollar construction project, we were using every construction technology that money could buy at that time.

It became apparent to me that something fundamental was missing from the technology that we were using for project management and production control.

In the world where BIM was driving the innovation and project delivery decisions, the project management tools were simply not equipped to keep up with the growing demand for collaboration and data-driven decision making that BIM processes required. In other words, the people were getting left out of the equation.

Most of the project management tools at the time were simply the electronic documentation and communication software. Mostly built on the 20th century technology stacks. And they were built ground up by keeping Paper, Microsoft Office and Email Based Communication workflows in mind.

They were completely missing the point when it came to using today’s mobile, web, computing power and internet tech for going beyond electronic documentation and email based communication. They were not thinking about the context, information overload, and about the use of data to produce intelligence.

At Builderbox.io we think about all of that and more. We are on a mission to make the technology work for people and make profit for companies.

Builderbox.io is culmination of my decade long journey in the construction tech world with the wonderful advisors at A&M, my colleagues at Builderbox and the AEC tech communities such as AEC Hackathon.

Builderbox.io is more of a Project Management + Production Control combo. At Builderbox.io, our goal is to help small to medium size AEC companies communicate effectively, document everything and make data-driven decisions.
