Culture as a model for growth

tl;dr Before growth comes company culture. Here’s our approach.

Company culture is becoming a buzzword, and for some, it may already is. Since everybody is talking about the importance of company culture, you might wonder who actually walk the talk. As we continue to grow our studio and ventures, we put great effort into creating an inspiring workplace. To be more specific, an environment to support a culture where people genuinely want to be part of. We said it once, and we’ll repeat it; we celebrate a work environment where people can grow towards their full potential and even beyond. We want to elaborate a bit on this to make sure you don’t get us wrong; this isn’t a crafty tactic to exploit people. When we talk about someone’s full potential, this isn’t comparable to squeezing the most out of a lemon. Our definition of someone’s full potential is quite the opposite.

During regular progress updates, we always like to talk about how much capacity someone is currently using, versus, what they would like to accomplish, and how together we can make that happen. We do this by keeping in mind what gives people energy, and what doesn’t, which we define using our personality tests, which is included in our hiring process. For us, this is how we define someones full potential: a delicate balance between comfort and challenge, to keep things interesting, challenging and energized. And since some people may underestimate themselves, we always like to present a case for what’s beyond their expectations by setting personal goals, measuring progress and monitoring the learning curve.

We believe our model contributes to culture for growth, towards a positive, energetic environment where people are motivated to keep amazing themselves and others. Being in the business of creating new companies, we love proactiveness and an entrepreneurial can-do mentality. Yet this isn’t achievable if our people are stressed out, feeling limited or worse; overworked. By focusing on individuals over groups, we are fortifying teams around aligned visions and complementary personality types. We believe this is how we can empower people to be their best selves, which ultimately reflects our work and company culture.

This may sound (and is) a lot of work, but it pays off big time. Fortunately, we have a great partner who is an expert on growing companies through culture. Together with Fortify, we are building our studio and ventures through various tools and methods. One of which is a personality scan which we made mandatory for every new hire at our studio. We use the results of this test both in our hiring process and personal development strategy, which helps us guide people towards their full potential.

At Builders, we are passionate about bringing out the best people and actively work towards a nurturing vibrant company culture. By tapping into someone’s potential, we believe great unexpected things start to happen.
