The biggest question that everyone wants to know is if AI will be the downfall of the human race. When business titan and engineer, Elon Musk, says that AI will end the human race, it sends shrivels down the spines of many. Musk’s reputation indubitably declares that he is a voice to be heard, but he is not quite an expert on the topic of AI.

Hearing it from a professional

Steven Van Belleghem is a thought leader on the transformation of customer relations and the future of marketing. In September of 2017, he sat down with AI expert Pieter Abbeel and interviewed him about AI(2017, September 05). Abbeel is a professor at the University of California Berkeley and has several years of experience in AI along with the creation of his own company, GradeScope.

AI in Customer Relations

AI is becoming more and more popular in customer service jobs because it is cost effective, but how do these machines learn how to talk to people? Much like humans need data to learn, machines do as well. According to Abbeel, when an AI in customer service receives an email it recognizes what questions are being asked and has to figure out what responses would normally answer that question correctly. Once it has created a response, a human being will edit it and send off the answer. The AI takes those edits and reads the data to see what was correct. Over time, as the machine gets more and more data, it figures out how to answer questions better. This saves a lot of time for the people in customer service and they can respond to questions faster.

Why AI will make our lives better

AI is not only limited to customer relations. The learning that AI does for customer service can be applied to marketing for businesses. For the average person machine learning can be used for:

  • Scheduling appointments
  • Organizing Schedules
  • Creating personalized shopping lists

The possibilities for AI are only limited by the amount of data AI receives. Abbeel stresses that the more data it receives the faster it will progress accurately.
