The truth is, bias is a fundamental part of human existence. You, me, and the next person, we all have them. Unfortunately, it’s times like this that remind us that bias against Black people has historically been more costly and far more dangerous.

And as many of us try to sort through the answer to “why?” I want to make one quick point of distinction between personal bias and systemic racism.

Personal Bias is just that… personal. Systemic Racism on the other hand takes personal biases and magnifies the effect of them to a level of impact that destroys entire communities.

In Venture Capital, we see this type of systemic racism when we look at the makeup of investors.

Only 2% of venture capital partners are Black. Which matches up with the 1% of VC dollars that go to minority-led companies.

For that reason, our team at Build in SE is making it a priority to drive change within the key positions of power in venture capital through research and community building.

Our first step is releasing this list of active investors in the SE (that happen to be Black).
