Y Combinator, one of the most well-known accelerator programs in the country, recently presented its Winter 2019 class. With over 185 companies presenting at its two Demo Days, this is YC’s biggest class yet. YC markets a diverse cohort across many industries and countries as well as a diversity in its founder pool.

According to YC, 40% of the companies in their Winter ’19 class are categorized as B2B software. The next leading category is Healthcare, making up 14% of this seasons class. As you may recall from a previous post about the Summer ’18 class, B2B software and Healthcare companies led that class as well, at 30% and 28% respectively. In that Summer ’18 class, we saw representation from 20 different companies and 5 of the 132 presented were located in the Southeast. Comparatively, the Winter ’19 class represents 36 countries but only 2 of its 189 companies claim the Southeast as home.

Here’s a look at the two companies:

Blueberry Medicine

Location: Boynton Beach, FL

Website: https://blueberrypediatrics.com/

Overview: Blueberry offers 24/7 access to a team of pediatricians via a smartphone or computer. The company, located an hour north of Miami, operates on a subscription model that starts at $15 a month. The company has already started partnering with insurance companies to reduce ER visits, something parents are also eager to avoid.

WeatherCheck

Location: Louisville, KY

Website: https://www.weathercheck.co/

Overview: WeatherCheck offers property monitoring to help property managers gain insight on damage occurred due to extreme weather. The company is initially focusing on hail damage but there are potential applications in other extreme weather conditions such as flood, earthquake, tornado, etc. The platform also offers a retroactive product for those wondering what sort of damage a home has incurred prior to buying or leasing.

What to expect from Summer ‘19?

After writing the piece about YC’s Summer ’18 class, I felt confident that the representation from the Southeast would increase with future classes. I was wrong in my prediction, but I still believe that the Southeast will continue to send strong companies to YC. There is plenty of potential in the new companies cropping up in this part of the country and it may be a slow process but the recognition will certainly come.
