“Your hands can’t hit what your eyes can’t see” — Mohamed Ali

In addition to being the greatest boxer of all time, Ali was also a marketing genius. The first step towards effective marketing is to get visibility; and this is where Google Analytics conversion tracking comes to play.

Conversion tracking shows you what percentage of your customers that end up taking a certain action, or set of actions, on your website pages e.g. % of customers who end up signing up, % who check your prices, % making a purchase, or filling a form to receive more information about your product. By tracking those actions, known as conversions, you will know how effective your pages are in driving customers through your funnel.

Conversion data can also be shared with your Google Ads (previously Google Adwords) account to understand which Ads, Keywords, and campaigns bring you business so you can double down on effective ones and dial back on those not performing as well to boost your return on investment (ROI).

Have A Plan

The first thing you need to do is to plot down your customer journey as they go through your funnel, top to bottom, and decide what are the milestones in their journey that you need to track.

Here are the top milestones that I recommend all my customers to track as a starting point:

  1. View Pricing Page: Customers who check your pricing page after landing on your site have likely bought into your value proposition/product promise and are considering a purchase
  2. Signup/Registration: Customers who signup for your product or trial have taken a step forward towards evaluating how your product delivers on the promise
  3. Request For Information/Quote: Customer is about to make a purchase decision
  4. Make A Purchase: Cha Ching!

This is far from a comprehensive list. Your final list is highly tied to the nature of your website and businesses. For example, a content site would benefit from tracking the “time on site” and the “average pages per session” as they present a clear indication of their users’ engagement and how much content they consumed. If a site offers a product video, then it is important to track how many users watched the video, etc.

Once you decide on the milestones of your customers’ journey through your funnel, and how they map to your website elements e.g. pages, buttons, etc. then you can start creating goals that map to those milestones.

Adding Google Analytics Conversion Tracking To Your Website

Goals like “time on site”, “page views”, or “pages per session” are simple to create and don’t require additional coding to your site. More advanced tracking, like tracking button clicks or video plays require custom goals and are (or used to be) a little more complex to implement as they require you to add JavaScript code that makes requests to Google’s back-end to tell Google Analytics about the actions (events) your users have taken.

This is why we created Funnelll; a platform that helps companies add the functionalities necessary to build and run better SaaS products and online businesses; visually and in minutes. No coding required!
