This won’t happen unless we build it together

We at QCade help businesses sell more by connecting user behavior patterns to reactions from the app/website. The final result is a personalized experience for every user, meant to enhance their journey as well as increase revenue for the business in real-time and at scale. Websites, apps and games can and should reactively adapt to whoever is using them to offer the best possible experience. You expect your neighborhood barista to know how you like your coffee, why would you expect less from your online experiences?

Companies have dedicated analysts looking at their customers’ behavior. The problem is product teams can’t keep up with the volume of insight and they end up implementing maybe one in ten ideas. In short, the lead time between insight and action is too long.

Our awesome team is made of two developers and one data scientist and we’re looking for two more. We are Romanian and live on almost opposite sides of the world. We are based in San Francisco and we have a presence in Berlin and Bucharest. We joke (or do we?) that we’re one Asia based colleague away from a 24 hour development cycle.

What moment or experience inspired you to start your own company?

In 2015, I was working in e-commerce, my cofounder (and wife) was a data scientist for a large mobile gaming company. We had similar pains related to not being able to take advantage of all the opportunities and ideas that crossed our desks. It felt like we always needed to pick a path of least resistance, and the low hanging fruit. This was a combination of getting push back from different parts of our organizations because it was ‘too hard’ or not having the tooling and infrastructure available. We realized this won’t happen unless we build it together. We sat down and iterated over ideas. I quit my job the next day and started this company.

Did you ever doubt yourself or face significant challenges when starting out?

Absolutely. Luckily, not all three of us at the same time. This may not work for everyone but in our team we are all fairly stubborn. We rarely immediately agree on a new idea without debating it. But it’s our diversity in thinking that makes us strong, weeds out bad ideas and dispels doubts. There’s strength in numbers. Something we learned is that no friend, advisor or well-wisher will ever know our business as well as we do and the best advice will come from some person you just met because you were at the right time in the right place. It’s not luck, it’s stacking the deck.

What does “success” look like for your company five years from now?

Five years from now we want to be an inspiration to other companies. While I can’t even start to imagine what our goals for 2022 will be, I expect that by the end of 2018 we will be enhancing the experience of more than 150 million visitors per month. That would put our ARR at around 2M. We are planning on keeping our team lean and we’re aiming for a headcount of 15 by the end of 2018.
