Getting ready for Texas storms

If you’ve lost power, contact your utility company

Your utility company is responsible for maintaining the power lines in your area and will be working to get power safely back on.

AEP: 1–866–223–8508
CenterPoint: 1–800–332–7143
Oncor: 1–888–313–4747
TNMP: 1–888–866–7456

If you’re not sure who your utility company is, you can find out by checking your Bulb account or this map from the PUCT, the organization that manages the electricity grid.

If you’re in critical care and need power, or if you’re having a life-threatening emergency, call 911. For urgent, non-emergency issues, call 211.

Prepare before the storm

Stock up on the essentials

  • At least a 7-day supply of non-perishable food and water. One gallon of water per person per day is recommended.
  • Battery or solar-powered portable radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid supplies
  • Medications, eyeglasses, contact lens solution and hearing aid batteries
  • Toiletries — don’t forget hand sanitizer
  • Extra clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Formula, baby food, diapers, and pacifiers; toys and games
  • Pet food, carriers, leashes and shot records
  • Tire repair kit, booster cables, pump, and flares
  • List of family phone numbers and addresses outside the area

Be ready to evacuate

  • Listen to local advice
  • Have your essential items ready to go. These would include your phone charger, clothing, cash, toiletries, medications and important documents
  • Make sure your car has a full tank of gas. Check the fluids and fill your tires with air.

Stay safe during a storm

  • Follow local radio and television reports for weather updates
  • Stay inside. The weather can change and may become dangerous even if it seems the storm has ended.
  • Keep away from windows and outside doors.
  • If you lose power, turn off and unplug large appliances
  • Evacuate if local officials have advised you to do so
