Texas utility companies are increasing their delivery charges

Starting September 1, all utility companies in Texas are increasing their delivery charges.

These delivery charges are separate from your Bulb energy rate, which will decrease slightly in September as summer ends.

A bit more about utility companies

Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Central, AEP North and Texas-New Mexico Power Company (TNMP) are the 5 utility companies that serve Texas. They’re responsible for getting electricity from generators to your home, and maintaining and repairing power lines.

Utility companies adjust their delivery charges about twice a year and these changes affect all Texans.

If you’re not sure who your utility company is, you can find out by checking your Bulb account or this slightly pixelated map from the PUCT, the organization that manages the electricity grid.

How delivery charges are calculated

Your bill has two parts to it, the cost of the energy itself and the utility company’s delivery charges. Delivery charges make up 30 to 40% of your monthly bill.

A utility company’s charges are estimated to reflect how much it will cost to maintain the grid. These estimates are submitted for review and approval by the PUCT.
