If you have been single as long as I have, I am pretty sure you know how it feels to look around you and see all the young lovey-dovey couples having the time of their life. But you know what, even so, I am the happiest I have ever been. Being single exposes you a lot more about love than a relationship ever can. It opens up your mind to a lot of things that usually someone in a relationship would overlook.

Here are some of the few things I learnt from singleton —

1.) Value Independence

With no one to lean on, you end up being your own rock. You learn to support yourself. You feel empowered enough to analyze and solve your own problems. The only voice that you need to hear is your own. You learn to enjoy your own company.

Valuing your own, you realize how important it is to value someone else’s independence as well. You tend to give enough space to people around you so that can figure the own shit out.

2.) Makes You Good Listener

Being single means you don’t really have a lot of things to talk about with your friends. So, you become the one in the group who has nothing exciting to share with your friends. But this doesn’t stop them from telling you how exciting their day was. This is the type of conversation where they do all the talking and you do all the listening. You are the one who shares their joy, sorrow, pain and of course their deep dark secrets. You now know the difference between hearing and listening.

3.) A Relationship Guru

This is so true. The person who is not in a relationship gives the best relationship advice ever.

The Love birds are so busy falling in love that they are unable to see the bigger picture. You end up analyzing everyone’s behaviour and patterns. You become the judge and the juror. The one to render an impartial verdict on silly couple fights. You can anticipate a heartbreak from a mile away. You start using this new found ability in your life too.

4.) 2 A.M. Saviour

Being single, you definitely don’t have anything better to do at 2 A.M. Sleep is overrated anyway. Who needs sleep when you can listen to the blubbering of your best friend ‘coz of the silly fight he/she had? It’s not like you have important the next morning like office. You learn patience and evince an attitude of empathy and compassion.

5.) More Family Time

You end up spending a lot of time with your family. You have a great deal of time in your hands to fight with your siblings. Visiting grandparents, watching your nieces and nephews grow, running errands are some of the things you dedicate your time to during the weekends.

6.) Focused On Achieving Goals

Not having a partner might make you feel lonely at parties but as it turns out, you end up having more time in your hands. It definitely gifts you the time to work on your career and your dreams. You tend to spend less time on social media and more time working towards being featured in one. You tend to think less about all the things wrong in your life and more about how to make them right.

7.) Builds Self-Confidence

Being alone gives you a lot of time to work your yourself. You start understanding your needs and trusting your instincts. This breeds self-reflection. Instead of working on someone, you start working on yourself. Voicing your opinions and building your character. This builds confidence. This self-confidence that you acquired start to reflect in all your relationships, romantic or otherwise.

8.) Forever Is The Goal

Being the spectator to all the love stories around you, you start to think about how different it would be for you. You have a lot of time to think about what you are looking for in your partner. It is not that you are building high standards, you just end up knowing what you want. You don’t believe in dating. For you, it’s for the long run. Nothing in between. It’s all about building a life with ‘The One’. You want it to be right and you want it forever.

Even though it seems like the grass is greener on the other side, this side of the world is not as bad as you think. Being single may seem like a punishment from the outside but it is definitely a blessing from the inside.

“Being single used to mean nobody wanted you. Now it means you’re pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with.”

— Sarah Jessica Parker
