The Netflix original series Stranger Things became an instant crowd favourite after its release. The story of this show is set in a small town in the USA during 80’s and it pays homage to many 80’s trends, music, and especially movies.

Here are some of the many 80’s movies that inspired Stranger Things:

1. Aliens (1986)

The idea of a humanlike creature of horror from another world, aka Demogorgon is highly influenced from Ridley Scott’s Aliens.

2. Stand By Me (1986)

A coming of age classic about a group of friends and their adventures, Stand By Me was a direct influence for the writers of the show.

3. Firestarter (1984)

A tale of a girl with telekinetic power whose parents were subjects of shady government experiments, Firestarter is clearly the background story of Eleven.

4. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Steven Spielberg’s E.T. was another film that influenced the Duffer brothers when they were creating Stranger Things. The epic bike chase scenes in the show are clearly a direct homage to this Spielberg movie.

Another coming of age movie about a group of friends, The Goonies inspired Stranger Things immensely. In fact, Nancy’s friend, and our beloved Barb was directly inspired from a character in Goonies.

A classic horror from the 80’s, A Nightmare On Elm Street was highly influential in giving Stranger Things a shape, complete with a monster roaming in a parallel universe.

A horrific predator like creature suddenly starting to visit a neighbourhood — sounds like the plot of Stranger Things, doesn’t it? But it is actually the plot of John Carpenter’s The Thing.
