In an announcement that took many by surprise, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was removed as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) for the 2017 IPL season, and replaced by Australian cricketer Steve Smith.
A lot of people have been outraged about the decision, which came just one day before the IPL players auction that was held in Bengaluru. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin urged BCCI to look into the matter with an urgency.
This is a career first for Dhoni, who willingly stepped down as the Indian team captain from all three formats of International cricket. The 35-year old cricketer had never been removed from a position.
“Frankly speaking, we did not have a good last season and we wanted someone young to lead the side and revamp it ahead of the upcoming season 10,” RPS owner Sanjiv Goenka told PTI. he also said,”Dhoni continues to be an integral member of our team. He is supportive of the decision keeping the franchise’s best interests in mind.”
Even though he will not be the captain anymore, MS Dhoni will play with RPS as a player of the team. Steve Smith, the 27-year old Australian replacing him, is the present captain of the Australian cricket team in all three formats.
