Life on Pandora can cause dramatic changes to humming bird species as we know them. The Humming Bird (detail) by Meg Konovska

This is piece No 3 of the “33” watercolour series by Meg Konovska (*khu-khum*, that would be… ME!).

The series consists of 33 paintings, 33 x 33 cm each. They are all created in the following manner:
• Randomly make 33 dots on the blank sheet, with eyes closed
Connect the dots in a complete contour, without intersecting lines
• The resulting silhouette is developed in a sketch which is completed in colour.

To top it off, each painting is accompanied by an explanation for the unsuspecting observer to consider.

I now give you

The Humming Bird (sold)

This is a giant humming bird mutant inhabiting Pandora (the planet from the movie Avatar).

After the allocation of the humming bird from Earth, the conditions on Pandora caused a pituitary gland hyper function and led to gigantism. Besides, its legs developed the ability of hiding entirely in the abdominal cavity, thus maximizing its aerodynamics.

In the next phases of mutation the beak of this humming bird is modified into a trunk similarly to an ant-eater, and it uses a long sticky tongue for taking food — capturing different insects as an addition to its modified diet which had transited from veganism to omnivorousness.
