What the Hell to Make of All This Personal Growth
Read 1 “Personal Growth” blog on Medium. CHECK
That’s about 4 less blog posts than what I have read on average off of Medium for the past 3 weeks.
So I sit here and think, well how much have I really utilized any of these blogs I’ve been reading? How much do ANY of these Medium readers actually put into practice from what they read here?? Hell, if every reader actually took into action what all of these personal growth stories were telling them to do, Headspace would make a billion dollars, Planet Fitness memberships would triple, and national productivity numbers would increase tenfold.
I don’t know about you but this guy just blew my mind; forget productivity, he just put all of his coworkers out of a job while simultaneously achieving his high score in fruit ninja. And they say multitasking is a myth…
Realistically, with all of these blogs in their own special way telling you to take a cold shower, do half-ass exercises after getting out of bed, meditate (between 2–60 minutes a day, the results will shock you!), make a schedule, single task, clean, clean your desk, clean your bed, clean whatever else is clogging your half-man cave/half kids playroom of a mind…WHAT DO WE DO WITH ALL OF THIS?
Stay committed! Ask a friend for help! Visualize yourself as Warren GD Buffett!
But really, what in the hell do we make of all this?
Genuinely take the time to try one of the many steps that have been suggested to you and see what works for you personally. I just tried making a schedule two days ago. I failed like Neville Longbottom did before he hit puberty.
But just like Neville worked out and became a stud, I tried the scheduling thing again today, simplified what I was aiming to do, set slightly more realistic goals, and I got a huge project out of the way in a day, along with giving myself enough time to write this. Now, I didn’t wake up as early as I wanted to, but I’m going to try tomorrow and see if I can improve again. If I don’t…well then you know who might be trying that stupid cold shower shit:
Point is, reading all of this personal growth stuff feels good, it makes us feel like we’re on the right path. But maybe it’s worth taking a step back to see how you’re actually utilizing what you’re reading to become more productive/more effective/more free. We can’t all be Tim Ferriss, the bastard who hacked all of life. But we can take steps towards improvement that legitimately help us better ourselves rather than simply thinking we’re improving while unconcsiously taking no steps of action or taking too many.
One step at a time, my friends. Easier said than done.
