I came across a news clipping about the move “kavi’. The movie is about child labor and modern day slavery, entirely shot in India. Kavi has won various awards and is also nominated for Oscars this year under the short film (live action) category. The film was directed by an American director Gregg Helvey. I saw few news papers report as, “Hindi film made it to Oscars.” I found it funny, just because the dialogues are in an Indian language we cannot take credit for the movie. Yes there is one reason for which we can take credit, for still allowing child labor and paying a blind eye to it.

A friend of mine told that these westerners are making money and fame using India. I replied him that “until we give them a strong reason to document things, more movies will come.” Instead of criticizing people who bring the sufferings of people, let us try to congratulate them. Would we object if Gregg Helvey had made a film about posh Indian kids dancing in a pub? No, we wouldn’t, we would have felt proud for showing the so called “real India.(???)” This is another reminder for us to stop and look at the traffic signals while driving to the multiplex.
