The first edition of Queer LitFest was organised in 2018 by Queer Chennai Chronicles (QCC) through crowdfunding. The first edition celebrated various voices of Queer Literature in India, with a special focus on the Tamil Queer Literature. QCC LitFest 2018 was a one day packed event, consisting of Panel Discussions, Lectures, Poetry readings, Book Readings, and an opportunity to network.
The Litfest brought together Queer authors, translators, creators, with media persons, Queer community and allies and stimulated conversations about Queerness in Indian languages and Indian English writings.
In the 2018 Queer LitFest, we also introduced the Social Justice Pride Flag to resonate the more inclusive queer politics that we believe in. More information about the Social Justice Pride Flag can be found at https://medium.com/qcc-blog/the-social-justice-pride-flag-635e51b80494.
In the time between 2018 Queer LitFest and now, we at QCC created a list of Queer Literature available in Tamil. And we are also focusing on creating queer positive stories for children. As a first step, we published “Nandiyarvattam” written by writer Gireesh as a Tamil comic.
Through the Queer LitFest 2018 — Chennai, we have found great support and ally-ship from progressive groups, individuals and also we found support from Tamil literary spaces outside India. It was a heartwarming moment when a allies and community members from Tamil speaking community outside India called us to congratulate about the Queer LitFest after they watched the videos on YouTube.
We have planned to organise the second edition of Queer LitFest, Chennai in September 2019. Like previous year, we are primarily depending on crowdfunding to maintain the autonomy of the festival. I reach out to you again this year seeking support for the Queer LitFest, 2019.
