Video is the king of content. According to a study conducted by Cisco, 82% of all consumer IP traffic will be video by 2021. And live streaming…well that will grow 15-fold by 2021, making up for 13% of all video traffic. So it’s safe to say, video definitely needs to be part of your marketing plan. Does this surprise you? Probably not! Since video was first broadcasted in the late 1940s, humans have been glued to the tube.

The history of video marketing

By the early 1950s the first three major networks (NBC, CBS & ABC) began national programming. And at this time, even though video was in black and white, had poor reception, and was basically the radio with talking heads — people were fascinated and they couldn’t get enough! TV antennas sprung up all over America and companies started investing in commercials & jingles to grab people’s attention.

Below you will find a popular 1950s commercial from Robert Hall Family Clothes.

The accessibility of video worldwide

Video has made an insane transformation since the 1950s. Not just in video quality but also in distribution. According to Cisco’s calculations, there will be ~27 billion devices and connections globally by 2021. If you take that number and divide it by the projected world population in 2021 (~7,718,256,830), that’s around 3.5 times more connected devices than people.

With this many connections happening in just four years, it’s easy to see how much the internet is transforming the distribution and accessibility of video content.

How many businesses have a video marketing strategy?

Businesses have caught onto this trend and are investing more time and money into video marketing than ever before. Earlier this year, a company called Vidyard spent hundreds of hours analyzing video data from more than 250,000 videos and 600 million video streams. They wanted to create a Video in Business Benchmark Report so businesses can compare their video marketing efforts to that of others. The infographic below summarizes their 16 greatest findings.
