Never Say Never

George Eliot wanted to be a writer but there was a problem with tradition, acceptance and change in the 1800’s. The writer’s world, as with much else during that period, was a male dominated world.

So, Mary Ann Evans chose a pen name and went on to write seven novels as George Eliot. She found her passion and then, side stepped societal limitations.

She didn’t come from a wealthy family and lost her mother when she was 16. By this time she had very little formal education, and had to take care of her father and siblings. The seed that sprouted her career was that she loved to read.

She is an inspiration to me because she faced a monumental roadblock and somehow managed to smash through it.

“It’s never too late to be who you might have been.” George Eliot

I think a lot of us suffer from imposter syndrome. Mary Ann certainly didn’t. She knew that she would be rejected simply because of her gender. Regardless, she ignored the norms and ploughed forward. Her legacy and career are a testament. At the end of the day, she believed in herself and created a career she knew she was capable of.

What If

This week’s affirmation is a product of a conversation I had with my Dad. I was driving him to a doctor’s appointment when he told me that I should have started my writing career much earlier. This isn’t a new conversation. We’ve talked about lost time before.

I used to agree with him and feel a bit frustrated and sad that I didn’t follow this path earlier. This time however, I told him that I’m writing now. I’m getting ready to publish another book. I write on Medium. I’m freelancing. It’s not over. I’m just starting and the writer I wanted to be in my twenties has finally arrived.

It’s never too late to be who you wanted to be earlier in your life. It took me years to pluck up the courage to write. It felt like a very vulnerable exercise. It is, but it’s also liberating.
