Never Say Never
George Eliot wanted to be a writer but there was a problem with tradition, acceptance and change in the 1800’s. The writer’s world, as with much else during that period, was a male dominated world.
So, Mary Ann Evans chose a pen name and went on to write seven novels as George Eliot. She found her passion and then, side stepped societal limitations.
She didn’t come from a wealthy family and lost her mother when she was 16. By this time she had very little formal education, and had to take care of her father and siblings. The seed that sprouted her career was that she loved to read.
She is an inspiration to me because she faced a monumental roadblock and somehow managed to smash through it.

I think a lot of us suffer from imposter syndrome. Mary Ann certainly didn’t. She knew that she would be rejected simply because of her gender. Regardless, she ignored the norms and ploughed forward. Her legacy and career are a testament. At the end of the day, she believed in herself and…
