With the creation of the Burnage Garden Village in 1908, a ‘garden suburb’ in the style of Raymond Unwin, its predominantly rural and agricultural character was slowly changing; but the area was transformed with the construction of the Corporation’s housing estates, beginning in 1923.

We see above an image of Burnage Lane at its junction with Mauldeth Road. Across the road is the large Manchester and Salford Co-operative Wholesale Society’s store, featuring a number of shopping units. Across Burnage Lane on the right, we see a number of smaller, independent traders including butchers and chemists.

In the excerpt below, local resident Ted Morgan describes the Burnage Lane of his youth during the late 1930s and 1940s.
