The Image
Excerpt from the City of Manchester’s 1945 Plan, describing the shortcomings of the housing estates constructed between the wars.
The image shows a view of Kingsway in Burnage, a new style ‘parkway’ constructed to accommodate the growing levels of motor traffic in Manchester.
The Design
The new housing estates were designed at a maximum level of 12 houses to the acre, with large gardens- front and back- and cul-de-sacs featuring prominently. Note also the extensive amounts of green space, trees and landscaping in public areas and along main roads.
