Today, Sunday July 17th, is World Emoji Day and brands all around the world have been celebrating this annual feat with varying levels of creativity on social media. What’s fascinating to me is the emoji is not new but it just keeps growing in popularity and is now one of the most universal forms of communication around the world.
FOR THE FACT FANS:
The emoji first came in to existence in the late 90’s by NTT DoCoMo and is regulated by the Unicode Consortium but now almost 20 years later, 6 billion are sent every day. Emoji was Oxford Dictionaries ‘Word of The Year’ in 2015 and with 972 emoji characters to choose from there’s clearly something for everyone!
