To conduct business analysis, a super foundamental and effective tool, called User Interview, is highly recommended at the initiation phase of a new project or a product.

As a product manager, or a business analyst, no matter if you have the direct contact to a stakeholder, User Interview is a practical tool you should understand and grasp definitely.

Why is it necessary to conduct user interviews?

Everything starts with why! When we try to elicite a requirement, we will raise hypothesis and analyse with empathy by standing together with the users.

However, we are not the end users at the end. Although we may use the same product as the users, we may have different understanding, explanation and expectation towarding the product and the practical scenarios.

Interviews, especially the face to face ones, can help us to understand deeply user’s thoughts through his/her physical expression, tones, wording, etc. For example:

  • Which expectation makes the user excited when he/she talks about it?
  • Which feature makes the user pursed his/her lips?
  • How does the user call the product with a nickname?
