What is the BA Mindset? Its twelve principles were the basis of my book “Business Analyst: A Profession and a Mindset”.

The first principle is:

💡 Focus on business — calibrate solutions to business goals 💡

While a business analyst reports to their functional manager and provides status updates to a Project Manager or a Scrum Master, their real clients are business stakeholders, and their interests should be driving business analysis activities.

And by the way, it’s the business stakeholders who supply the budget for the project (and pay for the hours of a contract business analyst).

Whatever a business analyst does, must be aimed at improving business processes, addressing business problems, and helping to make business more efficient.

That’s why there is the word “business” in “business analysis”.

Remember who your client is when:

  • Someone questions business requirements
  • Re-scoping is on the table
  • Solution design deviates from business expectations
