This may be an unexpected one, but let’s tackle another curious question I get as a BA coach.

Imagine that you get a BA job at a new company, and you are not that experienced yet, say, beginner to intermediate level. As you start the new job, you discover, to your surprise and possibly consternation, that you are the only business analyst.

There is no business analysis team, no senior analyst to consult with, and the company doesn’t really have much in terms of BA capability, methodology, templates, or documentation. You have to start from the blank page.

What are you going to do???

1️ Do not panic

️2️ Start acting as a Senior BA from day one

Yes, that’s right. This is your chance. Start acting as a senior business analyst — you are senior de jure, and you could be one de facto.

Even if you think it’s a stretch goal — this is exactly what stretch goals are for. This is your opportunity to apply those best practices you may have learned in theory. Now you can implement them.
