Let’s put fancy tools aside for a moment. Sometimes, you just need something quick and simple — for example, if you have to facilitate a virtual meeting with little or no preparation.

With most meetings happening in a conferencing mode — whether hybrid or fully remote — meetings live on-screen these days.

Please don’t do this if you are the meeting organizer. Your meeting participants are only human — without sufficient visual stimulation, they will tune out and lose track of the topic.

I know this from personal experience: however hard I try, if I am forced to keep track of a discussion thread just by listening to voices in the ether, staring at a black screen — it is agonizingly hard for my brain not to wander away.

You can’t control whether others turn on their video. However, as a facilitator, you have control over the screen share.
