More holiday cheer with free universal Pay Bill

As we start the festive season and close down 2016, I thought I’d share some good news.

Despite being lauded as a way to improve financial inclusion, Mobile Money has always been restrictively pricey for smaller transactions. People sending under $1 often paid over 20% in fees! Until now.

On the 4th of November, MPESA announced:

As part of our agenda to deepen financial Inclusion and transform lives, Safaricom M-PESA has reviewed M-PESA tariffs for low value transactions to encourage more transactions. To that end, we are pleased to inform you that customers will pay bills for free for transactions of between Ksh.1 to Kshs.100 and your organization will equally not be charged to receive such payments…

We applauded this gesture as a strong step towards making mobile money more accessible to more people. Our COO, Dan Kleinbaum, shared some thoughts about this.

Today, in the same spirit, we want to go one step further:

Starting today, Pay-Bill transactions under $1 shall be free, not just in Kenya, but across all Beyonic networks!

This means that your customers can pay you for free across Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania, with more to come!

We hope this will spur more innovation (and great joy, and good tidings) and help bring mobile payments to more and more people as we join with you to get rid of cash!

Happy holidays!
