I joined Hevo looking for an opportunity to learn the craft of Software Engineering from industry experts. I love building software-based products and was looking for an environment where I could get the freedom to build a product from scratch. When I joined Hevo, the product was at a very nascent stage, with a handful of engineers and customers and a lot of work to do on all fronts. Hevo provided the perfect setup to build a product in an agile fashion. We have been shipping features from Day 1, constantly gathering feedback from customers to make the product better. This gives a lot of opportunities to develop software in a practical fashion.

Challenges and Learnings
Providing a great user experience is one of the primary goals at Hevo, which makes building Web Apps challenging. At Hevo, we do frequent UI iterations to make sure that every user interaction is optimal. To achieve this, the underlying software framework needs to be robust. The way we solve it is by putting developer experience first; this results in much cleaner code, with well-defined interfaces that are flexible enough to cater to the UI changes. At Hevo, we build multiple front-end sites, which include the portfolio website, blog, docs, and website. Every site poses unique challenges in terms of performance, scale, and user experience. I think working on breadth helps accelerate your learning, and that has definitely been my experience.

Starting from a team of 5 people to more than 300, Hevo has grown and matured a lot, but the work culture remains the same. Collaboration is at the core of how we work. From idea to implementation, everyone is involved and is encouraged to provide feedback. People are well-grouped into small teams involving talents from product, design, and development. For any feature development, all stakeholders are involved from the very beginning of the conversation. Features are scoped from the mutual discussion between the stakeholders.

My Transition
The transition from an individual collaborator to a front-end lead has been amazing. It has helped me grow both technical and soft skills. As a team lead, you have to be highly motivated about the goals and enable your team to do their best in achieving the goals. Being a lead requires effective communication across teams to make sure that tech and product goals are met. After having worked extensively in setting up the framework for frontend development at Hevo, and knowing the ins and outs of how Hevo works, leading the team felt like a natural fit.

I enjoy working here because I get to work with smart and hardworking folks who are highly motivated toward the goal of building the best data integration platform. At Hevo, your contribution and effort outside your role are acknowledged via announcements and gratitude; small wins are celebrated with annual retreats. You are constantly encouraged to be a better version of yourself by focusing on weak areas. Hevo is growing and learning from its mistakes, with the intention to evolve into a better workplace every day. I think at Hevo, there is a strong belief that a company is defined by its people, and enabling everyone to perform at their best is one of the primary goals.

I think Hevo is an ideal place for anyone who likes to work in a collaborative environment to solve problems at scale. If you’re interested to learn more, please check out our careers page!
