DEWA saves 178 MW in electricity during Earth Hour 2020

Following Earth Hour 2020, DEWA achieves another significant reduction of electricity, with 178 MW saved.

Each year Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) observes Earth Hour, promotes environmental awareness to the community, supports global efforts to cut carbon emissions, finds sustainable solutions for global warming and climate change, and protects the natural resources to ensure sustainability for generations.

“Thanks to the vision of our wise leadership, Dubai has become a global role model for endorsing environmental causes and supporting global efforts in mitigating global warming,” commented HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“Dubai was the first Arab city to observe Earth Hour in 2008, which underlines its leading role in hosting and supporting initiatives that raise public awareness on environmental issues. Earth Hour goes beyond turning off unnecessary lights and appliances for 60 minutes. It aims to enhance environmental responsibility and encourages all of us to adopt a sustainable lifestyle.”

In compliance with the directives of UAE authorities AI Tayer urged DEWA’s customers and employees, as well as all members of society to stay at home during Earth Hour amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic, and to turn off all unnecessary lights and electrical appliances in order to raise awareness on carbon emission reduction and preservation of natural resources.

Earth Hour 2020 results

This year, despite the outbreak of COVID-19, DEWA achieved significant results during 2020’s Earth Hour. The company reported a saving of 178 MW of electricity consumption in the Emirates, which equates to a education of 74 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Joining millions around the world Dubai expressed its efforts to address the threats of global warming and climate change by turning off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances between 8:30- 9:30PM on March 28, with this year’s theme being ‘Raise Your Voice For Nature.’

“Earth Hour aims to raise awareness in society and underline the importance of the sensible use of resources. It goes beyond just turning off unnecessary lights and electric appliances for 60 minutes. Earth Hour aims to make conservation of electricity and water a daily practice to cut carbon emissions and combat environmental challenges such as climate change, global warming, and the unprecedented reduction in biodiversity,”
