The supermarket giant is joining forces Loop in trialing a scheme where shoppers will get products in reusable packaging

The ‘zero waste shopping platform’ will start trialing 150 products that will be delivered in reusable containers which consumers will pay a deposit for.

The chief executive of Loop, Tom Szaky said “the UK service would start off as a pilot, but would be delivering to the whole of the UK mainland, including Northern Ireland.”

The way in which the service would work is by the customer clicking the link on the Tesco website, this would allow them to shop for certain products such as Persil washing liquid, Heinz Ketchup to be delivered using the DPD courier firm. Once the products have been delivered and used DPD will return to collect the empties in a bag. The reusable containers will be then cleaned by hygiene and food safety firm Ecolab in DHL warehouses.

The Loop packaging could alternatively be returned either to Tesco or other retailers to get the deposit back.

Greenpeace said that the increasing influx of home delivery’s due to the lockdown caused by the Coronavirus gave “a real opportunity for innovation in reusable packaging”.
