Business Chief North America takes a look at Amazon’s top 10 states for digital entrepreneurs in the United States.

In a recent report conducted by Amazon, the company revealed the top 10 states with the most small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) selling in Amazon’s stores per capita, and the top 10 states with the fastest growing SMBs selling in Amazon’s stores.

Iowa

With an total area of 145,743 km² and a population of 3.155 million (2019), Iowa has almost 10,000 digital entrepreneur sellers in Amazon’s stores per capita. The state also has a 57% growth rate for SMBs selling in Amazon’s stores.

The top industries in Iowa include: healthcare and social services (15.7%); wholesale and retail trade (14.5%); manufacturing (13.1%); and education (12.9%).

“Iowa is home to thousands of small and medium-sized businesses selling in Amazon’s stores, and we’re working hard to support their growth despite the global pandemic,” commented Keri Cusick, head of small business empowerment at Amazon. “Both top 10 lists we revealed today demonstrate innovation in every corner of the country, with states like Iowa, Delaware, Wyoming, and Alabama coming out on top.”

Delaware

Currently in the United States, Delaware has an area of 6,446 km² and a population of 973,764 (2019). In Amazon’s latest report Delaware has more than 3,000 SMB sellers in its stores.

The top industries in Delaware include: agriculture, manufacturing, fishing and mining.

California

Populated by 39.51 million people (2019) in an area of 423,970 km², California has over 100,000 SMB sellers in Amazon stores. California’s largest industries include: Services, finance, trade and manufacturing.

Wyoming

With a population of 578,759 (2019) and an area of 253,348 km², Wyoming’s largest industries include: agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing. Currently the state has more than 1,000 SMB sellers in Amazon’s stores.

New Jersey

Currently, New Jersey has an area of 22,608 km² and a population of 8.882 million. This northern state has over 20,000 SMB sellers in Amazon’s stores, with its top industries including pharmaceuticals and life sciences, financial services, advanced manufacturing, information technology, and transportation and logistics.

Vermont

Populated by 623,989 (2019) with an area of 24,923 km², Vermont — known for its manufacturing and exportation — has more than 1,000 SMB sellers in Amazon stores.

New York

Known for its financial, healthcare, technology, retail, manufacturing and education, New York has almost 50,000 SMB sellers in Amazon’s stores.

New York as of 2019 has a population of 8.399 million and an area of 783.8 km².

Utah

With over 7,000 SMB sellers in Amazon’ stores, Utah has an area of 219,887 km² and a population of 3.206 million (2019). Utah has a diverse economy, its industries include tourism, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, information technology, finance, and petroleum production.

New Hampshire

With one quarter of its economy made up of the industrial industry, New Hampshire has a population of 1.36 million (2019) and an area of 24,217 km². Amazon reports New Hampshire has a total of 3,000 SMB sellers in its stores.

Florida

Finally, with an area of 170,304 km² and a population of 21.48 million, Florida’s top industry is tourism and has over 50,000 SMB sellers in Amazon’s stores.
