’MOOC’ (/muːk/) is actually an acronym standing for ‘Massive Open Online Course’. A MOOC is an educational course allowing anyone with access to the internet to enroll. A number of large universities such as Harvard, Stanford and MIT have begun running MOOCs in recent years, allowing people from various walks of life, all over the world, to get an education on different topics from top universities.

While MOOC’s have been a concept for a long time, the acronym gained popularity around 2008, and by 2012 many institutions had begun promoting the model.

There are a number of MOOC providers which provide courses from these institutions as a business, the most popular of which are Coursera, Udacity and edX.
