Incident Report of the Stolen Information (Graded Assignment 3)

Details of Incident:

An employee who works in our R&D department stole some research results on the ingredients of certain medicines and then send it to our competitor three days ago. During that period, the security system was not working and the internet access was not blocked. However, the security system was back up two hours later and the system identified an email that was sent from the R&D department. I immediately informed our legal department and asked the employee to report to the HR manager before he went home. Luckily, the information he stole was not the final research report.

Assessment:

The employee who stole the information is Ken Chang. We found out that he had installed a spy software on his flash drive, and used it to break the firewall. After that, he sent the research report to our competitor who has been interested in hiring Mr. Chang for half a year. He has admitted to his crime and our lawyer informed him that we will be taking legal action against him.

Action taken:

Apart from taking legal action, I have already updated our security system and installed an anti-spy software on all of the computers in our company. I have also prohibited all the R&D department employees from using flash drives so as to avoid similar breaches or stealing of information in the future.
