With the new year comes the dusk of a new quarterly calendar — meaning you’re most likely doing some evaluations, analyzing how your business year went, and preparing for the growth that is yet to come. One of the aspects of your business that you may want to build this year would be your lineup of vendors, but the hiring/partnership process can be a lot to think about especially for new founders. Lucky for you, we’ve got a few reflection tips to help steer you in a more comfortable direction!

As a new business owner, you’re most likely learning the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur by putting on the hats of multiple roles. Although learning how to do anything and everything is always a good thing, it would be helpful and more efficient to hire vendors that will meet you where you are — which means working with people that are willing to take the role of a teacher to some degree, to share knowledge via experience and observation all while getting more work done.

Try your best to hire based on trust and opportunities for collaboration. It’s enticing to bring individuals along based on their expertise, however, expertise does not equal teamwork. Work with vendors you can trust to work as a team to create further a culture that supports functioning in tandem with you as the founder or even with other vendors you are partnered with. Understand all aspects of your business so you bring people aboard that emulate a style and work ethic that align with your vision and mission statements.

One example of a vendor that you may want to look into hiring is a bookkeeper. A bookkeeper would be an excellent addition to your growing tree of partners because you can work closely together as this vendor would be in charge of keeping records, aiding in preparing for due dates and budgets, and overall financial support. A bookkeeper would have supervision over many aspects of your business that you most likely pay close attention to already, so working in tandem with this person can give you insight and advice on how to structure certain sectors of your business.

Your dream team should be one that fosters togetherness and promotes fruitful relationships. Hire what you can afford but keep a keen eye for those willing to collaborate and share their knowledge. The vendors that you bring along for your journey as a founder should be something other than transactional correspondence. Hire to build a culture where the goals of the company are embedded in the work of every individual so that the outcome of any project or endeavor is celebrated all throughout and not just by the founder.
