When your business is getting too comfortable, it’s important to address it, like you would in any relationship. You losing your edge means eventually the business will lose its edge too, and that’s not good for anyone or for your impact.

One way or another, you two need to break up:

1. Sell it. If you’re truly done with this business, it might be time to sell, take your assets, and build something new. Evaluate whether you truly want to, or can financially, let it go.

2. Do something else. When your business is dependent on your services, you may not be able to sell it without doing a major rework for a sale. If you just don’t have it in you to do that, you can shut it down and start a new venture.

3. Evolve it. New lines of business or even a second business can engage you again. I ran more than one business for many years, and it was both exciting and challenging. Take a look at opportunities in your business and your circle of connection for a new venture.

4. Take a break. You might just need some time away to gain a new perspective. It’ll likely take more than a week or two. I took a year off at one point and it was transformational. I created two new businesses as a result. You may not need as long as a year, but you can create a way to truly be away from your business for an extended period.
