MGMT 3210 Reflection
When I enrolled in the spring course, I assumed it would be an entry-level course on business communication. However, after reading the course description and discussing it with a friend who had taken the class, I realized it was more challenging than anticipated. Although the course materials indicated that it could be manageable with the proper understanding of the assignment requirements and task completion, I recognized the importance of active participation in class discussions, thoroughly reading the textbook chapters, and asking questions to excel in the workshop activities. These were the strategies needed to overcome communication obstacles and improve writing and presentation skills.
We were introduced to using Artificial Intelligence to generate drafts of our writing assignments during the course and explain why we chose that. As a first-time user of AI technology, I was amazed by its potential. It would provide some examples if you needed help figuring out where to start. I regret not taking advantage of this opportunity to enhance my writing skills and receive valuable feedback.
What about the course surprised you the most?
I must say, this course has been quite eye-opening. I never expected that it would have such a significant impact on my daily interactions with people. At first, I assumed that the things I learned would only come in handy in professional environments. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I could apply these concepts in my everyday life, especially when collaborating with my peers. It’s incredible how effective communication can be when you understand the underlying principles better.
Which assignment did you enjoy completing?
We had multiple smaller assignments leading up to the final project, where my group decided to focus on “How Google could rebuild trust with its Shareholders after the Bard incident through effective communication strategies.” This activity incorporated the majority of the topics in the course. Still, the most important thing we needed to acknowledge was what information the audience (shareholders) deemed necessary, which I constantly had to remind myself of.
For instance, based on the company’s background and reputation, was an apology necessary, and how much of the externally researched information did they already know? In retrospect, answering these questions before approaching the report would have been helpful. But, atlas, the assignment was completed, and it was fun and insightful acting as consultants for the company.
At what point in the course did you feel most engaged?
We strongly emphasized effective communication during the course, which led to several workshops.
These workshops consisted of discussion posts and responses to different group members for four activities. These workshops were highly beneficial, exposing me to my teammates’ diverse approaches and writing styles. This allowed me to get to know them better and created an opportunity for feedback from my group members, especially since I had yet to learn who they were due to the nature of the course. It was an effective way of improving my writing skills, as I received valuable feedback from my peers, which helped me identify areas where I needed to improve.
One challenging factor was the times I felt stressed if I continuously responded to two of the four group members due to some members not having posted a discussion. I was unsure if that would impact my writing ability, but I still appreciated those who gave me that opportunity.
Overall, the workshops were an excellent way to enhance my communication skills and writing abilities.
Did you meet your goals for this course?
I had two goals when I enrolled in this course:
- Incorporate what I learned into how I communicate with others.
- Ensure that I successfully finish the course.
For my first goal, I wanted to practice and find ways to improve my communication skills, whether at work and talking to a customer, fellow manager, or professor and classmates. Based on my fantastic group members’ feedback, there is room for improvement, but I know that I can reach my goal.
Moreover, completing this course successfully was my top priority. Although I faced difficulties during my first attempt in Winter 2022 and withdrew, I am proud to announce that I have succeeded this time. I am grateful for my determination and persistence, which helped me achieve this goal. I know that the knowledge gained throughout this course will benefit me in countless ways.
Which process will be most useful in the future?
One crucial topic discussed was how to tell your audience bad news. I have always found it challenging to deliver unfavourable information and always tried to avoid it to the best of my abilities, or I would let someone else handle it. However, through the practice in the workshop activities, I have found effective strategies to assist me in delivering them, especially in my current job, where I am continuously in such situations. For example, sticking to facts and avoiding apologetic statements will improve your tone.
Additionally, I must keep practising and tweaking them depending on my target audience.
What advice would you give a friend about how to learn the most in this course?
Seeing that I had asked for my friend’s advice for the class, I would inform any other friends going into this course to read the textbook. It will provide more details on approaching the different scenarios you face. For instance, it will have layout examples for letters and memos if you have never written one or recently have not written one.
Additionally, do the workshop activities before the last moment to do the workshop activities since your team will rely on you for their submissions. I understand that life can get in the way sometimes, so try to submit it during the allocated time to make it less stressful for you.
Moreover, communicate effectively with your group members if you are unsure about the projects or are having difficulties and do not wait for them to reach out. It does not help you or the group, especially if a meeting can quickly resolve it.
Furthermore, ensure that a contract is signed and created that clearly outlines the duties of each group member to set you up for success.
