Before I started my audit career, I had a negative impression of audit firms. Long hours, shouting bosses. Survival of the loudest. I knew what to expect from hearing audit busy season horror stories during my university days. Hearing those stories prepared me for the worst.

When I first stepped into the office of a local audit firm, I was scared and edgy. I knew I was entering alien territory. Even though I learned audit theories during my university days, I felt lacking. Raw. Untested.

Somehow, I got lucky. I got placed in teams that shaped my idea of a good auditor. I role modeled from team leaders who delivered both competence and care. Years later, I became better at working smart to avoid the horror situations.

Now, I’m returning the favor. I want to share with you my top work-smart tips to survive your first audit busy season. These are tips you wish you knew from Day 1.

I wrote this with the perspective of an auditor having international experience in two Asian countries and one in Europe. Whether you are joining an audit firm locally or planning to work in another country in the future, you will find these tips applicable almost anywhere.
