This article will give you insight in the browser trends 2018 and the prognosis of the future progress. If you run a website it is important to optimize the accessibility of it, to guarantee that your website works smoothly on the most popular browsers and devices.

Following numbers present the global figures across platforms (desktop, tablet, mobile) in May 2018 on web browser usage according to w3counter.com:

  1. Chrome: 56.6%
  2. Safari: 14.7%
  3. IE & Edge: 7.1%
  4. Firefox: 6.5%
  5. Opera: 3.5%

Chrome is the undisputed winner of the browser war. The downtrend from IE & Edge is clearly visible, the same applies to Firefox. Safari keeps it steady and has its biggest share in the mobile and tablet market.

Web browser usage (cross-platform) trend from 5/07–05/18

It is necessary to understand the browser usage divided by devices to get a more detailed overview in respect to the e-commerce conversion trends.

Desktop

The conversion in e-commerce on traditional devices due to the Monetate Ecommerce Quarterly Report | Q1 2018 is 3.77% and is thus the highest conversion rate of all devices.

A huge gap divides Chrome from Firefox. One can see a trend downwards of all the browsers compared to Chrome.

Not surprising Chrome is leading by impressing 66.93% throughout desktop. Firefox comes at second place with 11.55%. IE follows by 6.97%. Safari is ranked 4th with 5.48%. Next goes Edge with 4.15%. The data is provided by the web traffic analysis service Statcounter.com.

Tablet

Let’s have a look at the report — mentioned above — again. With a conversion rate of 3.40%, the tablet lies not far away from the desktop rates.

Safari wins this round — due to the market share of iPad.

Safari is the king of all the tablet browsers with 60.52%. Chrome has to make room for Safari and follows second by 24%. 11.81% of the usage goes to Android-browser for Android, which is the equivalent to Safari and iOS. Opera shares 0.98% and Firefox 0.65%.

Mobile

If we have a look at the overall website visits, the mobile device is leading by impressive 50.49%, which is ca. 25% more than all the visits from desktop. Mobile conversion was growing by ca. 15,5% since Q1/2017. No doubt that it is significant to have a separate look at its browser usage.

Chrome is growing and increasing its market share. Safari keeps it steady — has its ups and downs.

62.34% goes to… Chrome, the ultimate mobile browser leader. Safari comes second with 24.4%. Behind them one can find the stock Android browsers like Samsung Internet, Android-browser and Opera which together result in ca. 10%.

Conclusion: Google Chrome and Apple Safari continue to thrive and slowly eliminating their opponents

Nothing new under the sun. The browser trend continues. Chrome and Safari are leading the browser market, although Chrome stays the biggest player in the game. They both continue to erase their rivals like Firefox, Edge, IE etc. from the market — where a negative trend is clearly visible.

When developing it is important to understand your existing audience and therefore to understand what browsers they’re using and focus on optimizing them. These are very low-hanging fruits, which will boost your conversion.
