How Butternut Box came to be…
Sometimes life takes you to places you never expected to go. When we walked into Battersea Dog’s Home five years ago and first saw Rudie, I had no idea the journey that moment would take us on.
We already had Sam, our loveable old Shih-Tzu, who had been with us since he was a puppy, but we wanted to give a rescue dog a second chance at a forever family.
Rudie was found wandering the streets of London in the snow. Unfortunately, kennel life had been hard for her. She loved people, but was very nervous. She had kennel cough and was very thin and rundown. Her eyes were gunky, her skin was itchy and her bottom was smelly (hence the name Rudie). Even after a couple of weeks at home with antibiotics and lots of TLC her health and temperament wasn’t improving.
Returning Rudie to Battersea was never an option, so I began researching to try and find the reason for her health and behavioural issues. The vet suggested her problems could be food related and recommended switching her diet, so I decided to home cook all of Rudie and Sam’s meals myself.
I was amazed at how quickly Rudie’s skin, ears and behaviour improved. She became calmer, was no longer flatulent (thankfully) and her separation issues all but disappeared. Another bonus to all of this was Sam’s newfound lease of life and love of food, having previously been a notoriously fussy eater.
After seeing the difference a home cooked diet made to their wellbeing and happiness, I got to work. Through consultation with doctors of animal nutrition we refined the menu and created the Butternut Box diet.
What we have created is in our mind the perfect combination; the peace of mind of a home cooked meal combined with the knowledge that animal nutritionists have deemed the food complete. Our fresh dog food contains absolutely no preservatives, by products or fillers. It’s also grain & gluten free.
After extensive taste testing on both dogs and humans, it’s time to share what Rudie and Sam helped to create.
We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming so many new dogs and owners into the Butternut Box community.
