Maui, Hawaii, July 24, 2019 — With over 75% loss of insect biomass during a 27 year study in protected areas*, scientists are fearing the collapse of nature. Mankind's race toward improvement is having dramatic consequences on Earths earliest inhabitants.

At the current rate of decline of 2.5% globally, it is estimated that half of the planets insects will be lost in 50 years with complete extinction within a century. As insects are an important part of the foundation of our ecosystem, the collapse of the insect kingdom will have a domino effect on the rest of Earth’s inhabitants.

For most, a reduction in the mosquito and roach populations sounds like a good thing.

Insects are the Earths cleaning crew. They are also an integral part of the food chain. Many animals from fish to mammals are strict insectivores. The demise of the insect population will create an equal loss in the various species that rely on them. Determining the ever changing stressors on the insects requires loads of accurate data from reliable sources.

“Domesticated honeybees are the proverbial ‘canary in the coalmine’ and may hold the key to reversing the insect apocalypse.” - Maxim Polyarniy, Team leader of BUZZCOIN.

Honeybees as domesticated insects are in a unique situation to provide insight on the plight of the insect world. Experts in various fields from around the globe have come together to create a system to harvest not honey, but information from beehives using satellites, blockchain, and cryptocurrency.

As emerging tech and chemicals are introduced at breakneck speed, unexpected repercussions are commonly seen yet take years to address. It’s important that scientists, organizations, and companies are alerted to these newly introduced threats quickly in order to work to halt the damage before it becomes irreversible.

By using the BC-HMD (BUZZcoin Hive Mind Device) not only will beekeepers get more insight into the health of their hives, but the up-to-date data they share will be invaluable to researchers both locally and globally.

The BC-HMD is a device that monitors beehive health and productivity, collecting data to be used by the beekeeper and made available researchers.

Beyond benefiting the beehive from this insight, the beekeeper is rewarded in the BUZZcoin cryptocurrency, which transcends international currency borders fostering a global community of data gatherers. This added income can help the beekeeper offset the expenses incurred in caring for the bees.

BUZZcoin recently announced a partnership with Pollenity, developer of the world’s most advanced beehive monitoring technology, which has been named Best IoT Startup in the Central European Startup Awards 2017, has been included to the list of IEEE’s N3XT Stars 2017, won the Health and Environment track at the World Summit Awards, Google’s “New Europe 100” innovative startups and has received media recognition from numerous international media such as BBC and Financial Times.

The BC-HMD uses HIBER low orbiting nano satellites to collect data even in remote areas. Using satellites instead of cell towers or wifi also ensures longevity and draws less power from the battery.

An estimated 85% of Europe’s wildflowers are pollinated by bees. The loss of these flowers could have a major impact on the reliant wildlife.

A global threat requires a global effort wherein each participant is using their innate talents to the full. This growing alliance of companies holds promise in combating the decline of insect life through incentivizing a grass roots effort to gather data.
