The leading candidate in the Presidential elections of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, launched his election campaign near the U.S. border on Sunday.
During the launch, he responded to the threats President Donald Trump made about the migrants, DACA and NAFTA and demanded Mexico and its people be respected.
The candidate also hinted that if he wins the election on July 1, he would be less accommodating towards Trump as compared to the current ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party. The party- Partido Revolucionario Institucional or PRI, is known to have failed to deliver on why it’s unable to control violence and corruption in the republic. He criticized President Enrique Pena Nieto for his export-oriented economic policies which benefit only a few and has said he would suspend a $13 billion airport he claims is tainted by corruption.
And said “Mexico and its people will not be the piñata of any foreign government,” in a speech he gave before thousands of people and challenged Trump who said that Mexico benefits the most from NAFTA using the meagre minimum wage of Mexicans which is less than 90 pesos and is about $4.96 a day and the huge salary difference between American and Mexican auto industry workers.
He is also of the view that the social problems should not be resolved with walls or use of force and said that the renegotiation for the agreement should be suspended until the election in July and the new deal would address the immigration issues and wages.
