In preparation for the Ethereum merge, we’ve added support for Goerli and Sepolia, the only testnets that will support Web3 app development after the merge.

Ethereum will soon reach a significant milestone, transitioning from the proof-of-work (PoW) to the proof-of-stake (PoS) algorithm. In addition, the Ropsten testnet has completed its merge. As Sepolia will be its replacement, we’ve made some important changes you need to know about.

Ethereum’s merge will be different compared to its previous upgrades. For instance, if you’re a node operator, you won’t have to choose whether you want to update the consensus or execution layer; you’ll need to update both.

Additionally, Ethereum’s merge to 2.0 will significantly impact testnets. One of the most crucial aspects is that Web3 application developers will only be able to use Goerli and Sepolia testnets.

That said, we want to ensure everything stays in sync when testing your own applications post-merge and there’s no disruption. So, starting today, July 13th, we’ve added support for Goerli and Sepolia to continue aligning with our mission to provide an API endpoint for each supported blockchain network with minimal latency.

The Benefits of Migrating to Goerli Testnet

Currently, Goerli is the most stable testnet, with a strong community using and maintaining the network, and a numerous validator client set. Goerli supports a wider variety of node software, including Geth, Parity, Nethermind, Hyperledger, and a separate ledger from the main Ethereum network.

It has all the right ingredients to provide the best testing environment for mainnet contracts. Also, stakers can safely test protocol updates, and web3 app developers can test their products before launching them on the Ethereum Mainnet.

Sepolia Testnet Merge

Like other Ethereum testnets, Sepolia offers dApp developers the right place to test their applications. But compared to other testnets, Sepolia’s validators are public, which means the chain can sometimes fail to finalize.

As the freshest testnet, Sepolia has already been deployed, and was integrated with the Beacon Chain, successfully upgrading from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake.

After the merge, Sepolia will have a permissioned validator set, and will help users who want to sync running nodes faster.

We’re Dropping the Support for Kovan and Rinkeby

The Rinkeby testnet will not run through Ethereum’s merge, so it’ll stop producing blocks and will no longer be a proper testing environment for Ethereum mainnet.

Communities of both Rinkeby and Kovan may maintain and upgrade these testnets separately, but client developers will no longer monitor them.

We’ll continue to support Kovan and Rinkeby for only a few months. After that, we recommend and encourage you to start migrating to Goerli or Sepolia as soon as you can. This will allow you to test Ethereum in a post-merge context properly.

The Ethereum foundation has deprecated the official Kovan support. Kovan is a Proof-of-Authority (PoA) network meant to work with OpenEthereum, but the latter will no longer support Kovan software for the soon-to-be Ethereum merge.

What you need to do:

  • Generate new Goerli or Sepolia RPC endpoints in Blast
  • Copy-paste and update the new Goerli or Sepolia URL in your code
