Knowledge is power, and much knowledge can be acquired through reading. At Byte Orbit, we’re big fans of knowledge-sharing, so we’ve decided to let you in on some of the gems we’ve discovered on our bookshelf, with a monthly book review — welcome to the first one!

1. What attracted you to this book?

The name Dataclysm was a clear giveaway that this book was going to be about analytics and social platforms. Two key things we are currently working to improve on the DINE4SIX platform (one of our internal startups). It was a great read and very insightful as well as incredibly relevant to the space we’re in.

2. What is the basic storyline?

Dataclysm is written by Christian Rudder, co-founder of a popular dating site, OkCupid. The book builds off the OkTrends blog Rudder ran at OkCupid which addressed his users' most important questions such as “How should you shoot your profile photo to get maximal interest? (no flash, shallow depth of field) etc. — In Dataclysm Rudder describes a whole new way of being able to do social science by analysing the free information provided.

3. What were some highlights?

I particularly enjoyed how they spoke about using the data they received and the lengths they went to, to record the information they really needed in order to make important decisions that eventually led them to sell OkCupid for a whopping $50 million to Match.com in 2011.

4. What insights have you gained?

I would say that the book has reinforced my belief in using user data to overcome business problems and to create something that can be a truly useful tool in the modern age.

5. Who do you think should read this book?

Anyone in the startup space who is interested in finding out how they can better use the data they are receiving from users. More apps are being created to meet new people whether it’s for a date, a hobby, a social dining experience and if you’re anywhere in the world wondering what your users really want, this book is for you.
